WCPFS AWARDED $3M GRANT, LAUNCHES NEW “SPIRALS” PROGRAM
Waldo County Preschool and Family Services has been awarded a $3 million grant from the federal Early Reading First Program. This is the second ERF grant for WCPFS, following a $2 million award in 2002, the program's inaugural year. The agency is one of only three ERF-1 grantees nationwide to receive a second round of funding, and its early reading initiative in the mid-coast has been hailed as a national model. Through its first ERF grant, WCPFS guided hundreds of children in developing crucial literacy skills. With this new grant, the agency plans to bring these benefits to hundreds more over the next three years, and—through SPIRALS' curriculum- and professional-development initiatives—to many more into the future. A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, RUTH SOUTHWORTH
Dear Parents,
If your child is 3, 4 or 5 years of age and enrolled in our program, he/she is about to embark upon the opportunity of a lifetime! The federal government, through a competitive application
process, has chosen Waldo County Preschool & Family Services (WCPFS) as one of only 32 programs nationwide to receive an Early Reading First (ERF) Literacy and Language grant. ERF funds are given to only the finest classrooms in the country to provide these remarkable programming opportunities. This ERF project, entitled SPIRALS, is a unique collaboration between WCPFS, its Mid-Coast Children’s Services program and Waldo County Head Start.
During the months ahead, we will be enriching your child’s language and literacy development through the highest quality activities you’ll find anywhere. We guarantee the program will be wrapped in a developmentally appropriate curriculum full of fun, challenge, new adventures and excitement. The end result will be that your child will develop a love for learning and readiness skills that will carry with him/her into kindergarten.
We will keep you informed about your child’s classroom experiences. We’re sure that you will begin to see amazing progress. Congratulations on choosing the WCPFS SPIRALS Program. We are so excited to share these next few months with you and your child.
Sincerely,
Ruth Sourthworth

UMaine Study: Early Reading First increases kindergarten readiness
Early Reading First has made a difference for children and families in Waldo County, according to the University of Maine Center for Research and Evaluation's (CRE) recent Kindergarten Screening De-Segregation Study. CRE analyzed data for kindergarten students in SAD 34, comparing scores of children in Early Reading First to the entire group screened. The results exceeded expectations.
"When compared to the entire group screened for kindergarten, children who had attended Early Reading First classes scored 0.933 points higher," said UMaine researcher Brian Doore. "… This is especially significant as this means the ERF children's scores are coming in above the kindergarten population, and because ERF is targeted to serve at-risk children, the expectation would be for (ERF children) to score lower."
