Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County

Established in Waldo County in 1986, Literacy Volunteers is dedicated to improving the literacy skills of adults in our community.  We deliver instruction using a dedicated corps of well trained volunteer tutors.

Do you want to read or write better?  We can help.

Basic Literacy Tutoring

You will be matched with a tutor to help you reach your goals.  Most lessons take place once a week for 1 to 2 hours.  Lessons are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. This is not a school, there are no "classes" , it is one on one training to meet YOUR reading goals. After your initial meeting wtih us, a tutor will be matched based on your specific goals

Literacy services are  confidential.   Your name will not be shared with anyone besides your tutor.

Whether you are looking for a short term goal of getting your drivers license or a larger goal of getting your GED, we can tailor a program for you.

  • Increase your job opportunities
  • Manage your money
  • Manage your health
  • Take your written drivers or commercial drivers exam with confidence
  • Take the State hunting and archery safety exams to get your licenses
  • Fill out forms
  • Take the US citizenship exam
  • Improve yourself and be more aware of the world around you through newspapers and magazines.
  • Learn to enjoy the pleasures of reading novels, short stories, self-help and "how to" books.
  • Learn to read to your children
  • Learn to read so you can help your children do better in school
  • Read your books of faith
  • Make better nutrition decisions by reading food labels
  • Learn simple computer skills
  • Improving your literacy skills will make you more confident and open new worlds to you
