Broadreach works in collaboration with many community partners to implement programs and services that improve conditions for the children and families of our region.

Students and Parents in Cooperative Education (SPICE)

SPICE meets the needs of families who live in one of the eleven towns of MSAD 3, have an educational, parenting & child development goal, and have a child eight years old or younger. SPICE is FREE to eligible families.

SPICE is dedicated to increasing literacy skills in our clients by improving an individual's ability to read, write, and speak in English, compute, and solve problems, at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family, and in society.  SPICE is a collaborative project of Maine School Administrative District 3 and Broadreach Family & Community Services. The SPICE Program receives funding support from Evenstart and the Maine Department of Education.

SPICE provides families with:

  • the opportunity to earn a high school diploma or GED at home;
  • one on one tutoring at home;
  • opportunities to increase job skills and career potential;
  • support for parents and children in both home and school settings;
  • parent training to help children succeed in school;
  • parent support and resources to address children’s behavioral issues;
  • age-appropriate books during home visits; and
  • assistance in developing good schoolwork and homework skills.

Healthy Youth Project

The Healthy Youth Project works to reduce alcohol and tobacco use by Waldo County youth aged 12-17. It is funded by an 18-month grant from the Office of Substance Abuse and is administered by Broadreach's Child & Parent Council Director.

The Project uses a positive youth development strategy to engage with young people to help them identify needed changes in their school or community environment and to provide support so that they can undertake projects to achieve positive change. Project activities have been conducted with all 3 school districts and include holding Awareness Days to focus on issues important to youth, supporting Challenge Day – a full day exploration of stereotyping, discrimination and harassment, the Youth Empowerment and Policy Project working on underage drinking, and the 09 In Action youth philanthropy committee at Mt. View High School in cooperation with the Maine Community Foundation.

Grant funding supports a portion of the salary of the Child and Parent Council Director. Broadreach Family & Community Services and Building Communities for Children sponsor this project.
