Child and Parent Council

Effective child abuse prevention requires a whole community effort. The Child and Parent Council is one of sixteen Child Abuse and Neglect prevention Councils in Maine. The Council’s work is guided by an Advisory Board representing diverse professional and geographic areas in Waldo County.

The Child and Parent Council works to promote safety and quality of life for children and their families in Waldo County; encourages and maintains coordinated community efforts to prevents child abuse and neglect;and advocates for appropriate and timely intervention and treatment for abused and neglected children and their families.

The Child and Parent Council helps to prevent the abuse and neglect of children by
raising awareness, providing education, building community strengths and coordinating services.

The Child and Parent Council provides:

  • professional training for “mandated reporters” and on topics relevant to the needs of children and families in workshops and conferences;
  • parent education in the form of classes, workshops and written materials including a lending library and the Kids First program for parents experiencing separation/divorce held on the second Saturday of each month;
  • service collaboration with others involved in educating, advocating for and protecting children;
  • organization of “family fun days” such as Child and Parent Day, a twenty-year tradition, and:
  • The Nurturing Fathers Program

The Healthy Youth Project, administered by the Child & Parent Council, is a collaborative project of Broadreach and the Building Communities for Children Coalition working to reduce alcohol use by Waldo County youth aged 12-17 through positive youth development activities .

The work of the Broadreach Child and Parent Council is supported with funding from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
